There are several walk that are suitable for most abilities in and around Stresa. With a bit of help from public transport you can get off the beaten track and enjoy some splendid views of Lake Maggiore. Below are some short descriptions and links to our blog for longer descriptions and logistical details. To the right you will also find a download of a walking map of the area.
The Chestnut Route | For a pleasant walk through the woods to the next lakeside town, the Chestnut Route is ideal. It is well signposted from the centre of Stresa and also along the route (both the usual yellow signs and handcrafted wooden ones). You pass through several villages and through beautiful woodland in between to reach Belgirate. The walk takes approximately 2½ - 3 hours and is not too demanding. To return to Stresa you can walk the same route back or take the train, ferry or bus. Follow Sarah and Luca on this walk on our travel notes blog. |
Montorfano and Mergozzo | This is a wonderful walk from Verbania train station (direct trains from Stresa) to the tiny hamlet of Montorfano with its pretty chruch and rustic stone houses. Take in amazing views across the Borromean Bay before heading along the woodland path to Mergozzo on the shores of Lake Mergozzo. After lunch overlooking the little harbour catch the train back to Stresa. Read more about it here on our Stresa travel notes blog. |
Stresa Town Trail | We've put together a little self-guided trail around Stresa so you can find out a bit more about the buildings, monuments and the town's history. Click here to download a pdf version to print out. |
The Cadorna Line | The Cadorna Line walk is a 7km easy round trip above Pallanza. You will need to drive to Piancavallo and park in the free carpark near the Hospital. Take the road to the left of the hospital and follow the Cadorna military road with wonderful views down over the lake. You will eventually reach the old military bunkers and lookout points which you can explore (bring a torch!). There is then a map showing the rest of the route which takes you through the woods and back round the road to the carpark. The route is flat and easy. |
