Our journey starts by following the river up the Anzasca Valley with it's pretty villages hanging on to the craggy rocks and hillsides. The dramatic scenery includes views of the pine trees, ravines, traditional stone houses and churches as well as criss-crossing the river.
The pretty main square will be your first view of Macugnaga and the the town is yours to explore!
There are plenty of ways to spend your afternoon in Macugnaga. You can take a walk through the old part of the village with its traditional wooden Walser houses to the Chiesa Vecchia (Old Church). The church dates back to the 12th century and just outside is the 500 year old lime tree which was a meeting place the Walser people from the surrounding valleys used to come to.
In the summer months why not take a ride up to the Belvedere Glacier on the chairlift? The journey itself is beautiful a silent ride above the tree tops with wonderful views. It is only a short and very easy walk from the chairlift to the edge of the glacier moraine. An incredible experience!
Also during the summer you can take a cable car ride up to Monte Moro for panoramic views across to the glacier and Mount Rosa.
If you are visiting the first weekend of July you'll also be able to experience the traditional San Bernardo Fair.
