Mottarone Stresa Walk Cadorna Line Walk Lake Maggiore Stresa Chestnut Route

See Complete Slideshow Below

There are several walks which either start directly in Stresa or whose starting points can be reached by public transport or using the Mottarone Cable Car. From the Tourist Office in Stresa (at the ferry station) you can pick up a copy of the leaflet "Trekking Mottarone" which has a map detailing a lot of the walks in the area. There is also a great map available at the tourist office or the cable car station with walks from Mottarone/Alpino/Baveno marked on with descriptions in English (a donation of €2 is requested). The Mottarone/Stresa/Alpino and Chestnut Routes are also detailed well in the "Sunflower Guide" to walks in the Italian lakes.

However, here is a short description of some of the walks starting in Stresa:

For the less expert walker it is probably best to start from the top and work down! You can catch the Mottarone Cable Car from Stresa Lido to the top of Mottarone (change at Alpino) where you start your walk (signposted L1 on yellow signs). The start of the path down is to the right as you exit the Mottarone Cable Car Station. It takes about 1½ - 2 hours to walk down to Alpino. There is a small bar by the Alpino Cable Car Station (which also sells sandwiches) and several spots where you can stop for a picnic. Here you can decide to visit the Alpine Gardens, continue walking down to Stresa (about 2 hours) or take the Cable Car back down the rest of the way. Please note that the second half of the walk from Alpino to Stresa is very steep down hill.

For a more demanding walk you can follow the L1 route from Stresa upwards! The suggested time it takes is 4½ hours, however this is quite optimistic!

The Chestnut Route (Sentiero dei Castagni): Stresa/Belgirate

For a pleasant walk through the woods to the next lakeside town, the Chestnut Route is ideal. It is well signposted from the centre of Stresa and also along the route (both the usual yellow signs and handcrafted wooden ones). You pass through several villages and through beautiful woodland in between to reach Belgirate. The walk takes approximately 2½ - 3 hours and is not too demanding. To return to Stresa you can walk the same route back or take the train, ferry or bus. Follow Sarah and Luca on this walk on our travel notes blog.

Other Mottarone Routes

As well as the main route mentioned above from Mottarone/Alpino/Stresa, there are other routes leading down (or up!) from Mottarone/Alpino/Stresa.

On the map mentioned above there are also routes which lead down from Mottarone or Alpino to Baveno. You can then return to Stresa by ferry or train.

Nearby Routes

The Cadorna Line walk is a 7km easy round trip above Pallanza. You will need to drive to Piancavallo and park in the free carpark near the Hospital. Take the road to the left of the hospital and follow the Cadorna military road with wonderful views down over the lake. You will eventually reach the old military bunkers and lookout points which you can explore (bring a torch!). There is then a map showing the rest of the route which takes you through the woods and back round the road to the carpark. The route is flat and easy.
